Roof leaking during an atmospheric river? What to do tonight
It's raining sideways, and there's a drip coming through the ceiling. Here's what to do in order.
1. Stay safe
- If water is near light fixtures, outlets or the electrical panel, switch off that circuit at the panel if you can do so from a dry spot. Otherwise stay out of the area.
- If the ceiling is sagging badly, keep people and pets out of the room.
- Don't go on the roof.
2. Contain the water
- Put buckets or storage bins under drips. A towel in the bucket reduces splashing.
- Move furniture, electronics and rugs away. Cover what can't move with plastic.
- If a ceiling is bulging, poke a small hole at the lowest point with a screwdriver to let water drain into a bucket in a controlled way.
3. Track it
Check the attic with a flashlight, if it's safe to reach, to see where water is coming through. Note the time it started and the wind direction. This helps the roofer find the source.

4. Document
Take photos and video of the ceiling, walls, floors and any damage outside visible from the ground. Save receipts for anything you buy.
5. Call for help
We answer 24/7 at (628) 336-1777 and pass urgent requests to available local roofers. Roofers won't work in dangerous wind or lightning, so the first visit may be a tarp, with the permanent leak repair after the storm.
6. Dry things out
Wet drywall, insulation and carpet can grow mold. The EPA says drying within 24 to 48 hours usually prevents it (EPA). For anything more than a small wet spot, see Sonoma County Water Damage.
