Hiring a roofer after a storm or fire in Sonoma County: a checklist
After big storms and fires, demand for roofers jumps and so do scams. California has specific protections, and a few minutes of checking can save thousands.
The checklist
- Verify the license. Enter the license number on CSLB's license check. Confirm the name matches, the license is active and the classification fits the job (C-39 is roofing). Check workers' compensation and bond information there too.
- Know the disaster rule. CSLB says contracting without a license in a declared disaster area is a felony (CSLB).
- Limit the down payment. On home improvement contracts, the down payment can't exceed 10% of the price or $1,000, whichever is less.
- Get it in writing. Scope, materials, start and finish dates, permit, cleanup, warranty and a payment schedule tied to completed work.
- Don't pay in cash, and don't pay ahead of work.
- Be wary of door-knockers who just happen to be in the neighborhood with leftover materials, pressure you to sign today, or offer to handle your insurance claim for you.
- Ask who pulls the permit. It should be the contractor, from your city or Permit Sonoma.
Insurance claims
Your insurer may send an adjuster. You can get your own roofer's assessment too. Keep copies of everything and don't sign documents that assign your insurance benefits without understanding them.
